The Scientific Society of Hellenic Medical Students (SSHMS) is a voluntary student organization founded in 1993 which maintains branches in all the cities where Medical Schools are operated (Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklion, Larissa, Ioannina and Alexandroupolis).
Specifically, in recent years the branch of Alexandroupolis has gathered an abundance of events to showcase, all of which were met with enormous success and participation by not only medicine students, but also students from the other departments of the Democritus University of Thrace that are situated in Alexandroupolis.
Indicatively it is referred that the Alexandroupolis’ branch has managed to establish an annual seminar regarding the emergency cases (Emergency Case School – E.C.S.) that takes place at the Theater Building of the city, with the participation of more than 400 undergraduate medical students each year. The ECS’s aim is to react in theatrical presentations of emergency cases, exhibiting at the same time the appropriate course of action in each case (in collaboration with the theatrical group of students of the Democritus University of Alexandroupolis), as well as teaching through practicing basic medical skills such as wound stitching, intubation of the patient and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Apart from the ECS, the branch has organized several events with a view to promote the free donation of bone marrow, the development of a trusted relationship between physician and patient, dealing with addictions and more.
